Joanne Watson is a consultant endocrinologist and the first clinical director of patient experience in England. Ever since she had a conversation with an engineer in the airline industry in 2000, Dr Watson’s career accomplishments have reflected an ambition to improve on safety and quality in health care. Her work as the Head of Department of Metabolism at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton centred around these goals and involved improvements in long term conditions care over a broad range for people in Somerset as well as patient flow with in her acute Trust.
Through this work and her belief that change has to come from clinicians at the frontline, in 2008 Dr Watson was awarded a Quality Improvement Health Foundation Fellowship to work at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There she focused on the importance of patient experience to draw together the markers of high quality health care and particularly how hospitals can rise above mediocrity.
Returning to England in Autumn 2009, she now works as a frontline physician and clinical director of patient experience in Taunton. Dr Watson is delighted to be part of the Point of Care team working on the Hospital Pathway Transformation Programme at the King’s Fund, especially as the case for quality improvement is strengthened in these challenging times.
